Encouraging A Vote

Encouraging A Vote

Boy there sure are a lot people doing things to encourage people to vote. The following two items stand out as favorites for two different reasons. The poster was conceptualized by Emily Christensen at Frank & Margaret, who is rewarding voters with a discount at her super cute shop. She organized the whole campaign and Start-Thinking helped by freeing up Philip to design the poster. The video reminded me of the power of television. Do Opie, Andy, Richie and Fonzie carry more weight than Ron, Andy and Henry?

Owning a Business in Old Town, Wichita

Owning a Business in Old Town, Wichita

The first seven months of “living” in Wichita’s Old Town neighborhood have proven the decision to move was right. We’ve found so many benefits of doing business in the downtown core area. Working in this neighborhood feels good. Being amongst the historical buildings with the mix of new and old businesses is a nice backdrop for a quick bike ride to the bank and post office. Lunch locations are various and within a short walk and we’re convenient to all of Wichita. There are things going on here. More people are choosing to live in the core making it more …

Midwest Contractors EXPO and Joe the Plumber

Midwest Contractors EXPO and Joe the Plumber

A trade show is not newsworthy. Having a tradeshow for plumbers during the 2008 election is. When pitching a story to the news media, TIP CUP: timeliness, impact, prominence, conflict, unique, and proximity must be relevant for the story to be considered “news.” During the 2008 presidential election, “Joe the Plumber” became a substitute for that other American icon, “Joe Sixpack.” It was just our luck that our client, Kansas Plumbing Heating and Cooling Contractors Association, would host their annual Midwest Contractors EXPO tradeshow just when “Joe the Plumber” exploded into mainstream media. Talk about a timely event. This story also included …

Case Study: National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Case Study: National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Last year, we were charged with implementing the rebranding of the Western and South Central Kansas Division of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The graphic look was already established by Wieden+Kennedy, an advertising agency in New York City, but the headquarters of the National MS Society offered no direction or budget for the roll out of the new brand. Start-Thinking chose to focus on the local MS Society’s events (MS Awareness Week, MS Walk, MS Bike and the Dinner of Champions) and our goals was to secure earned media tailored to niche audiences, but of interest to a broader base …

Kansas People – DVD Marketing Project

Kansas People – DVD Marketing Project

I am not sure how many of you out there watch KAKE news on channel 10, but they have a series that runs on Sundays called Hatteberg’s People. I suggest if you have not seen this you need to go and watch as many episodes you can. This is one of the most interesting things that I have ever seen. Did you know that one Kansas man owns the last Kodachrome Film processing machine left in the world? Neither did I but thanks to Larry Hatteberg, now I do.  There are more than 1000 examples that I could share, and …

Midwest Contractor’s Expo ’08 – Branding Before and After

Midwest Contractor’s Expo ’08 – Branding Before and After

Every year the Kansas Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association holds an EXPO. This year I was asked to adapt the brand of the event so that it would appeal to a larger variety of people associated with the organization. This was probably one of the most challenging branding projects I have faced since I have been at Start-Thinking. The biggest problem that I faced with this project was that other that the fact that I take a shower everyday and use a heater and an air conditioner, I have no experience at all with anything related to plumbing, heating or …

Mark Flickinger Branding – Part One

Mark Flickinger Branding – Part One

Mark Flickinger came to us with a problem: The Sherry French Gallery, the gallery that represents Mark in New York, was really bugging him to get a web site up and running so that they could have immediate access to some of his work without having to rely on e-mail or even worse – snail mail. In our first couple of discussions about this, we realized that what he really needed was a “brand” that would establish Mark in each of the markets where his work is shown but also on the web, where he is currently almost non-existent, but needs to have …

Yvonne Jacquette, Metropolitan Area Triptych

Yvonne Jacquette, Metropolitan Area Triptych

Debbie from Wichita Art Museum called and asked for help with some simple table decor for a dinner honoring Yvonne Jacquette the artist of a recent acquisition. The photo shows how elegant a simple table setting can be and demonstrates how we borrowed some of the orange color in Metropolitan Area Triptych (see an image of the art below) to tie the art to the table setting. Yvonne Jacquette (b. 1934), Metropolitan Area Triptych, 2007, oil on canvas. Wichita Art Museum, S.O. “Bud” Beren Memorial. Funds contributed by the Murdock Society of the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum, Louise Beren and the Beren …
