Old Town Workout

Old Town Workout

Today was our first workout in Old Town. We stayed within a two block radius of our office and utilized objects around us for an all around workout. A walk at the beginning took us to the corner at River City Brewing Co. We did jumping jacks and squats for all drivers on 1st Street to see. Bench push-ups was our last exercise at this spot. By putting our arms on the seat part of the bench and our legs far back behind us we pushed through our palms to make the small movements. Many people think they have to go …

Oh Sunny Day

Oh Sunny Day

Sun shinning, birds tweeting, Start-Thinking employees sweating— all in all a lovely day.   Our workout with Robbie Ray today was invigorating.  We warmed up and then went outside to soak up some vitamin D.  Our workout stations were at each light pole and we jogged to each one.  Today the stations were squats, jumping jacks, lunges and calf stretches.  At the end of the street, we turned and jogged all the way back to the gym without stopping. The core workout today focused on our lower abs with “flutter kicks” and our total core with planks.  We even got some …

Robbie’s Fitness Alphabet : A-F

Robbie’s Fitness Alphabet : A-F

Today for Thinking Fit we did more than work out, we caught of glimpse of Robbie‘s Fitness Alphabet. A is for Abs: Today we did about four sets each of touch the sky and leg lifts. B is for Back and Balance: We do a lot of exercises to strengthen our back and gain balance. C is for Contralateral: Standing on one leg and lifting weights with the opposite arm is an example of a contralateral exercise that helps with balance. C is also for Concentric: Think of the muscle contracting when you are lifting a dumbbell for a bicep curl. Most of the …

Back in the groove

Back in the groove

After a rockin’ spring break road trip to the Gulf Coast, I was looking forward to our Monday workout with Robbie. I felt like I had been fairly good over break considering I spent hours of each day walking everywhere (including barefoot on the beach). Robbie warmed us up with our usual stints on the rowing machines, stretched us out and then put us to work. We jumped right into three rounds of cobra push-ups, lunges and touch-the-sky crunches and a jog to the end of the block and back. Then of course back to more exercises. I was introduced to …

Luck O’ the Onion Patch

Luck O’ the Onion Patch

This Wednesday, St. Patty’s Day, we decided to skip the workout with Robbie Ray to pick weeds at Pat’s onion farm. Pat is a local farmer who sells her fruits of labor to local restaurants and buyers at the Old Town Farmer’s Market. Imagine picking weeds with the rumble of traffic from the highway and the charging train rolling by; truly an unique experience. The “urban farm” is out on Old Lawrence Rd right before you get to Journal Broadcast Group. As part of Thinking Fit we are trying to achieve balance between the mind, body and spirit. Picking weeds is …

Everyone’s doing it.

Everyone’s doing it.

It was pleasant but certainly not surprising to see Chad McClure at the gym this afternoon. After all, it was his officemates Justin McClure and Dominic Flask who recommend Robbie Ray to me when I told them our team was going to start Thinking Fit together. Today wasn’t the first day others have shared the gym with us. There’s a strong community that meets regularly to go through the list of exercises their trainer posts for them on the white board at the entrance. It’s simultaneously reassuring and motivating that people are working to be fit. Somewhat challenging for me is keeping …

Escaping email slavery: How to be email free by the end of 2010 (or: How to greatly reduce email)

Escaping email slavery: How to be email free by the end of 2010 (or: How to greatly reduce email)

Robin asked me how I plan to go email free. Instead of emailing her back, I decided to write a blog about my three email accounts and what I am doing to better manage each in 2010. I can’t even remember the last time I used my  Yahoo! account. But I check it once a month so it won’t go away because I have addresses and other information that that I don’t use but can’t bring myself to part with. Each month of this year when I check the account, I am spending 15 minutes shrinking the content by either archiving …

Creative Thinking Expanded

Creative Thinking Expanded

Tired of doing the same old thing? Do you wish you would branch out and be more daring? Today Kris took the challenge to try something different and out of the ordinary for her. While flipping through Real Simple magazine, a necklace caught Kris’ eye. Pretty gold, pearls and metallic colors of the multi-layered necklace stood out to her; as did the whopping $1,000+ price tag. Using her imagination she went to Target to see how closely she could come to replicating the fashion. With no luck at Target she ventured on to what many ladies would call the “cave of …

Wiggle Wednesday

Wiggle Wednesday

So this Wednesday started off great as a bright sun shining day. The morning rolled along slowly then came the rain. We were all a little bit sluggish today. As Kris mentioned to Robbie, we needed a wiggle Wednesday, something to boost our energy during the day. We determined that not filling out our food logs for Robbie at the beginning of the week may have been the cause for our rainy day blues. Without our logs we weren’t keeping track of what we were eating. I never thought writing down what I eat and drink would make that much …

Not All Personal Trainers Are The Same

Not All Personal Trainers Are The Same

I have a fairly limited experience with personal trainers. Over the years I’ve had different ideas about what to expect. There’s the drill sergeant, the encouraging words of wisdom, and the exercise video “3 more… 2 more… 1 more… OK.” This week marks the start an 8-week program with Robbie Ray at Fitness with Robbie Ray. My initial kick-off session and a first real workout session with Robbie and my co-workers told me how trainers and programs can be so different. I’ve joined the YMCA twice before and as such, they have offered a few sessions with a personal trainer with the …
