New and Improved

For some odd reason our parking sign happened to grow legs and walk away. The situation allowed me  to design a new one, hopefully one that will keep people from parking in our reserved space. When I designed the Start-Thinking logo, I knew it had to be versatile and I thought about all the different ways it might need to be used. I admit that it didn’t occur to me that I’d need to design a parking sign but I did. I’ll let you know if it works. Continue Reading...

Wichitans of the Year – 2008

Wichitans of the Year is an event that Start-Thinking produced for Wichita magazine. The event was held for 10 people in Wichita that were nominated by their peers for this honor. As you can read in the December issue of Wichita magazine these people do a lot for other people and really help our community grow. The occasion was a special one so Tom and Kris and I chose black, white and silver as the color palette. The honorees stand out in real life so I wanted the invitation to stand out as well. The color scheme helped give the invitation a formal look and …Continue Reading...

Kansas People – DVD Marketing Project

I am not sure how many of you out there watch KAKE news on channel 10, but they have a series that runs on Sundays called Hatteberg’s People. I suggest if you have not seen this you need to go and watch as many episodes you can. This is one of the most interesting things that I have ever seen. Did you know that one Kansas man owns the last Kodachrome Film processing machine left in the world? Neither did I but thanks to Larry Hatteberg, now I do.  There are more than 1000 examples that I could share, and …Continue Reading...

Midwest Contractor’s Expo ’08 – Branding Before and After

Every year the Kansas Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association holds an EXPO. This year I was asked to adapt the brand of the event so that it would appeal to a larger variety of people associated with the organization. This was probably one of the most challenging branding projects I have faced since I have been at Start-Thinking. The biggest problem that I faced with this project was that other that the fact that I take a shower everyday and use a heater and an air conditioner, I have no experience at all with anything related to plumbing, heating or …Continue Reading...

Mark Flickinger Branding – Part One

Mark Flickinger came to us with a problem: The Sherry French Gallery, the gallery that represents Mark in New York, was really bugging him to get a web site up and running so that they could have immediate access to some of his work without having to rely on e-mail or even worse – snail mail. In our first couple of discussions about this, we realized that what he really needed was a “brand” that would establish Mark in each of the markets where his work is shown but also on the web, where he is currently almost non-existent, but needs to have …Continue Reading...

Recycle in style

Recycling sometimes is not the most glamorous thing in the world, but here are some signs that will help you get started off on the right foot. The files are available for download. Just click on the picture of the one you want. If you want both then you are more then welcome to them both. Continue Reading...

Innovative Marketing Techniques

Some of my vices are video games and movies, so naturally being a design geek I tend to look at their marketing plans a little more closely than the average bear. Recently, three have really stood out to me. Step Brothers, NCAA Football 09, and Battlefield Bad Company. Continue Reading...

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame :: golf brochure

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame hosts a golf tournament each year. We wanted to help them take it up a notch this year by developing a brochure as an invitation instead of just sending a letter. We wanted something that would standout but would also give a nod to the antique look of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame identity. The direction we took was to prominently feature Sand Creek Station as the new location of the tournament and to emphasize the significance of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame with watermarks and a list of all the inductees …Continue Reading...
