Save Yourself, Plan Ahead Thoroughly

Planning is easily the most important aspect to any project. Literally ANY project. Knowing what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it is clearly an essential step to accomplishing anything, but also going beyond simple planning to get into fine details of your steps allows you to move through work much more efficiently. Knowing what you will do in case of certain situations is always helpful as well.

It’s hard to do anything without planning even a little bit before hand. Maybe it’s only some vague ideas like “I’m going on a road trip”, with no plans of where or how to get there or what will be done. While you can still accomplish your goal of going on a road trip, you’re going to struggle along the way when you encounter questions like “Which way do I go now? Should I stop here and rest? Is there anything cool to visit in the area?”

Sitting down to plan out a project in very fine detail before actually putting your effort into the actual work can allow you to move through the work very quickly. Having steps lined out for what to do in case of certain situations eliminates the time you would have spent stopping, evaluating the problem, and determining a workaround or solution. Planning for these things keeps us from wasting time tackling the issue in the middle of our workflow.

The best way for me to accomplish this is to sit down and write down exactly what it is I’m trying to do. In my case this might be to turn a website design in Photoshop into a coded website in HTML & CSS. First I write down the main steps involved in the process. I then break those steps down further into smaller steps so I can clearly see what all work needs to be done, step by step. The smaller the steps, the easier it is to do one, call it done, and move to the next.

All in all, planning allows us to take out the time we would normally spend figuring out what the next step in our project is and instead have it all clearly outlined in writing. We can then follow this plan as we work as a guide to greatly speed up workflow. Planning is easily one of the most important aspects of any project, and should never be overlooked.
