Big Wheel Keeps on Turning

Big Wheel Keeps on Turning

The big wheel kept on turning at our group fitness session today when Robbie (that’s him in the red shirt) partnered us up and had us shuffle from one end of the gym to the other while pushing a huge tire back and forth. This is one of those activities that you’re willing to do for a long time because is seems like more fun than work. Then the next you find yourself scratching your head asking, “What did I do to my body?”

The Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita recognizes three employers each year that provide an environment that helps employees make healthy lifestyle changes. This year’s honorees — Bombardier Learjet, the city of Derby and Start-Thinking — will be recognized Tuesday as part of the sixth annual Working Well Conference. The conference …

So Long, Farewell

So Long, Farewell

Now begins my final intern blog post. Who would have thought that simply checking my Twitter one day would lead to such a great experience? I met Kris last summer while I was interning for the City of Wichita with Tabitha Meyer. The city was collaborating with Start-Thinking on Smithsonian magazine Museum Day 2009. While checking Twitter during a homework break, I saw a tweet from Kris saying she was looking for summer interns. I had recently been searching for an opportunity for the summer, so I took this as a sign. The first week started off as a bit of a …

Thinking Fit on the go

Thinking Fit on the go

Our Thinking Fit blog is filled with recipes and tips on eating well while at home, but Thinking Fit doesn’t stop at home. Even when you are on the go, there are ways to maintain a healthy, Thinking Fit lifestyle when you are away from your normal surroundings. One significant way is  portion control. We have all fallen victim to unhealthy dining while on the road and eating large meal portions while eating out at restaurants. To combat this, consider splitting a meal with your dining companion. It’s a cost-effective way to enjoy a meal and allows you to leave the …

Sorrell and Asparagus Risotto

Sorrell and Asparagus Risotto

This recipe offers a way to use the greens, onions and garlic at the farmers markets right now. If you haven’t made risotto before, this is a great recipe but be prepared to stand over the stove stirring until it feels like your arms is going to fall off. (It’s always worth the effort.) Sorrell and Asparagus Risotto (okay to substitute other leafy greens like kale or collard) (serves 4) 4 cups chicken stock (I use vegetable stock) 1 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 …

Easy Cantaloupe Soup

Easy Cantaloupe Soup

The only negative about cantaloupe is that the window for eating one stays open for just about five minutes. So what to do if you can’t devour your cantaloupe before it goes soft? Make soup! Ingredients: one large cantaloupe, cubed (remove rind and seeds) 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups orange juice (or one of the variations like pineapple orange banana) 2 tbsp lime juice (about the amount you can squeeze from half of a fresh lime) Add the cubed cantaloupe and cinnamon to a blender or food processor and puree. After it’s blended, add …

When Robbie Ray’s away

When Robbie Ray’s away

When Robbie Ray’s away…we’re still thinking fit. While Robbie Ray was in Jamaica last week (and didn’t take of us with him), Kristen lead our workout. Since it was unseasonably cool, we decided to work out outside. We jogged down to the Museum of World Treasures as a warm up. For our work out, we used various parts of the surroundings around the museum. We used the entryway for lunges and sumo squats, benches for dips and the steps for quicksteps. I think that is one of the most important parts about working out. Sure, a fitness trainer and a gym membership …

Eating Seasonably

Eating Seasonably

Nutrition is a big part of #ThinkingFit. It’s important to remember that exercise alone isn’t going to help you lose weight. I have to confess that I’ve fallen off the wagon this week. I think everyday I consumed Chinese food for lunch or dinner. I just love Chinese food; it’s my weakness. Also how can you blame me, the portions are big enough for two meals. Today I stumbled across Eat Seasonably, a website that guides you in choosing fruits and vegetables that are in season now. The interactive calendar lets you choose by month or type of produce to learn …
